One Bread, One Body - Reflection for February 13, 2010

WORD-HUNGER

A "large crowd assembled, and they were without anything to eat." –Mark 8:1

The crowd following Jesus had nothing to eat. Moreover, some of them had "come a great distance" to hear His words (Mk 8:3). Unless Jesus had miraculously fed the people, some of them would have literally collapsed (Mk 8:3).

How hungry are you for God's word? Would you come a great distance to hear the word? Are you so intent on hearing God's word that you would put yourself in a position where you couldn't get any food? Would you sacrifice to the point of physically collapsing to receive the spiritual nourishment of God's word?

The psalmist proclaimed: "How sweet to my palate are Your promises, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" (Ps 119:103) Jeremiah said: "When I found Your words, I devoured them; they became my joy and the happiness of my heart" (Jer 15:16). "Be as eager for milk as newborn babies – pure milk of the Spirit to make you grow unto salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good" (1 Pt 2:2-3, see also Heb 6:5). Hunger for God's word.

PRAYER: Father, may I eat more spiritually than I do physically.
PROMISE: "Those who had eaten numbered about four thousand." –Mk 8:9
PRAISE: Praise: Hungering for a word from God, Amelia drove some distance to attend worship services.
