One Bread, One Body - Reflection for February 5, 2007

JESUS, THE CHIROPRACTOR

"They laid the sick in the market places and begged Him to let them touch just the tassel of His cloak. All who touched Him got well." –Mark 6:56

We've heard Jesus called the Doctor, even the Physician (Mk 2:17). I've also called Him the Surgeon, but this is the first time I've recognized Him as the Chiropractor. A chiropractor brings healing by realigning the bones, muscles, and nerves. When a body part is out of place, problems result. If everything is put back into proper order, healing takes place. "Make straight the paths you walk on, that your halting limbs may not be dislocated but healed" (Heb 12:13).

The Lord took a formless wasteland and formed the beautiful, harmonious creation (Gn 1:1ff). When everything was in proper order, there was no sickness, suffering, or death. But our sin ruined God's order and brought about sickness. When we repent, we reinstate God's order and remove sickness, not only for ourselves but also for all creation.

Currently, all creation groans and is in agony because of humanity's sins (Rm 8:22). We're so disordered that we can't save ourselves. We need a Savior, a Chiropractor, a new Creator. When Jesus' human body was contorted and wrenched in death on the cross, mankind was given the grace to go back into place and be healed.

PRAYER: Jesus, before I knew You my life was a mess. Thank You for saving me.
PROMISE: "Then God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light." –Gn 1:3-4
PRAISE: St. Agatha gave up all good things, including her safety, her health, and her life, to live forever in the glory of God.
