One Bread, One Body - Reflection for February 2, 2007

THE CANDLE-MASS

"When the day came to purify them according to the law of Moses, the couple brought Him up to Jerusalem so that He could be presented to the Lord." –Luke 2:22

Today is traditionally called Candlemas. The Church invites you to receive blessed candles to remind you of the light Jesus has given to you. With Simeon, you are ready to die, for your "eyes have witnessed [God's] saving Deed displayed for all the peoples to see: a revealing Light to the Gentiles, the Glory of [His] people Israel" (Lk 2:30-32). Jesus has been a revealing Light to you, and in His light you will continue to see light (Ps 36:10).

Your candle symbolizes Christ's light received and yet to be received. Take your candle home, but don't light it right away. Wait until God's light dawns for you. To open yourself to the light, first present yourself to the Lord. Acknowledge you belong to Him and not to yourself (1 Cor 6:19). After your presentation, then pray for purification through the baptism of fire (Lk 3:16; Mal 3:2). After presentation and purification, seek the light of revelation, "inspired by the Spirit" (Lk 2:27).

Each day we see more light as the days lengthen. This, with the candles, can symbolize the revealing Light of Jesus in our lives. Expect Christ's light to shine on new things for you today.

PRAYER: Jesus, before the day ends show me something I've never seen before.
PROMISE: "Since He was Himself tested through what He suffered, He is able to help those who are tempted." –Heb 2:18
PRAISE: We praise You, Jesus, the Light of the World! Praise You for giving us the light of life (Jn 8:12). Alleluia!
